No one had ever heard of Carlos Luna prior to last night's private showing of his Fall/Winter 2011 Couture Collection but Carlos had already presented his glorious collection during Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week in February. Carlos Luna has arrived and it's no surprise that he was invited to show his collection at last night's private benefit gala. I had the opportunity to speak with him during New York Fashion week where he gave me a private backstage showing of his designs since I had to run to another show that night. In order to get the perspective of Carlos's vision for his inspiration to his designs, you have to know that he loves the glamour of "The Golden Age of Hollywood." Since I myself am a huge fan of that era, we hit it off quite easily as we exchanged favorite movie moments with grand stars like Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Marlene Dietrich.
Luna's Fall/Winter 2011 Collection is a statement for classic looks in fashion, of an era long gone and it's 'glorious.' The collection of course is updated with vibes for the woman of today, where looks are paired with colored legging which creates color contrast. The use of fabrics was essential for his inspiration with the abundant use of 100% silk lycra, organza, chiffon and charmeuse. Carlos says he, 'loves the fabric choice because it just moves and flows' to create the drama that we love to see when clothes are worn. The draping for his designs seem very easy to the natural eye but looks very complex in the under laying for some of the looks, like a stunning tucked high necked evening gown. It wouldn't be fall without a coat, so we loved the very dramatic wool tweed boucle coat, which to me has a very nordic aesthetics to it. The color trends are definitely a warm burst of mustard, plum and steel blue which created the color contrast for this collection which I wonder might be a natural capability of Carlos in creating color statements for fashion.
In a world where designers are emerging every fashion season with looks that are either all black or sensationally experimental, comes Carlos Luna a designer that loves the classic aesthetics of fashion. Loyal fashionistas know that when it comes down to the basics, style is classic, innovation is important and a good fit is key. Carlos Luna's Fall/Winter 2011 Couture Collection is a statement of his passion for fashion and the calibre of creativity we can expect from him, in time to come.
