For his structural black-and-white collection, David Yoo found inspiration in a set of photographs from the 1890s. “The old portraits set a mood and also told a story about the person in just one frame.” But it would be hard to tell this 24-year-old’s story in a single shot. Born in Los Angeles to a father working in the fashion industry and a mother who encouraged participation in the arts, Yoo became interested in oil painting at an early age, earning scholarships to Ryman Arts and Art Center Los Angeles. He also flexed his athletic talents in high school as a football player and avid skateboarder. Not until the dynamic student began at the Rhode Island School of Design did he begin designing and making clothing. But with an ELLE Fashion Next Award, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week show, and inclusion in Schiffer Publishing’s Emerging Fashion Designers 2 (due out in May) now under his belt, it seems this all-around talent has discovered his niche.
